BIRR is the acronym for Building Identity & Resisting Radicalisation. The BIRR Initiative was established in response to the growing need for a tailored educational and mentoring service for the Muslim youth of southwest Sydney.
‘Birr’ is also the Arabic word for goodwill and virtue. Its choice as the name for this project symbolises the energy channeled towards assisting Muslim youth in discovering their religious identity in an Australian context and enhancing their capacity to build a positive Australian Muslim identity.
With leadership development being the cornerstone of the Building Identity and Resisting Radicalisation Initiative, our objective is to equip youth with the guidelines and skills - as derived from true Islamic values and virtues - necessary to resist negative influences and social disengagement, such as extremist views and criminal behaviour.
